Books sooth my soul. Books lead me to understanding people and places when I can't experience them firsthand. For me, books can lead to compassion and empathy. They can lead to wisdom. Join me in exploring new worlds, new concepts, ideas, and ways of being.

Reasons to Stay Alive. This book was recommended to me by a new friend who lives in England. It allows the reader to experience depression in a way few writers can achieve (in my humble opinion). A very personal story, it allows the reader to enter into the experience and come out with a new sense of what it means to live with major depression. The author also reminds you that no book can reflect every possible experience, but this one gives you essential perspective. Matt Haig is a British author for children and adults. His memoir Reasons to Stay Alive was a number one bestseller. Neil Gaiman said of his writing: 'Haig has an empathy for the human condition, the light and the dark of it, and he uses the full palette to build his excellent stories'.

The Book of Joy. Lasting Happiness in a Changing World.  A recent favorite, this is a must read. And it comes with specific recommendations of contemplative activities to support Joy in your life.  Spend a week with two great spiritual masters share their own hard-won wisdom about living with joy even in the face of adversity. And really spend time in reflective meditation throughout.

Revolution. This one will stir your blood and send you into action!   We all know the system isn’t working. Our governments are corrupt and the opposing parties pointlessly similar. Our culture is filled with vacuity and pap, and we are told there’s nothing we can do: “It’s just the way things are.” In this book, Russell Brand hilariously lacerates the straw men and paper tigers of our conformist times and presents, with the help of experts as diverse as Thomas Piketty and George Orwell, a vision for a fairer, sexier society that’s fun and inclusive. This book makes revolution not only possible but inevitable and fun.
